Heartworm Flea and Tick Prevention

The FDA has issued a warning for oral flea and tick prevention that are in the isoxazoline class. These medications are causing adverse neurological side effects such as seizures and death.

Examples:

  • Bravecto

  • Nexguard

  • Simparica

We advise our adopting families to exercise extreme caution when administering these oral flea and tick medications. Please note that if you choose to administer one of these medications, your health warranty will not cover adverse neurological effects such as seizures and death.

What We Use

***Please note that we are not veterinarians, and owners should consult with your veterinarian about what treatment is NEEDED FOR YOUR AREA.***

We are firm believers you should be administering flea and tick treatments based on your dog's individual needs. For example, a dog who lives in a city with an artificial grass back yard, does not need the same prevention plan as a dog who lives in the country.

HEARTWORM PREVENTION:

We administer Interceptor Plus. It is a monthly prevention dewormer prescribed by our Veterinarian. It prevents heartworm disease plus treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm, whipworm and tapeworm infections.

FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION:

Yard Treatment:

The first step to prevention is treating your yard. This can be accomplished by hiring a pest control company, or treating them yourself with a flea and tick prevention spray found at most hardware stores and Amazon. Many options are available and some are easy to use and attach right to your hose.

Topical Prevention:

During spring, summer and fall months we also administer a topical treatment such as Frontline or Sentry
